Maija Rhee Devine, the author of an autobiographical novel, The Voices of Heaven, set in Korea, will give a reading/powerpoint presentation on Sunday, August 24th at 1:30pm at the Carbondale Public Library. The novel/love story set during the Korean War has won three book awards and has been described as a “masterpiece of historic fiction”. A Korean War survivor, Devine earned her B.A. from Sogang University, Seoul, Korea and an M.A. from St. Louis University. At her reading/presentation, she will discuss the love story of a couple struggling after inviting a woman into their home to bear them a son required in their partriarchal society. She provide vital links between the Korean War and the crucial aspects of current Korea, particularly as they relate to the war and gender issues.
