In general, there is no limit on the number of items that may be checked out. However, some exceptions are noted as follows:
- DVDs/Music CDs/VHS limited to five per card.
- Art prints are limited to one per card.
Library staff reserve the right to further limit the quantity of titles on a subject, by a specific author or for other reasons if demand or availability at the time warrants such action. The number of materials a client will be allowed to check out in that case is at the discretion of library staff. If the situation warrants, materials may be placed on reserve for library use only. Reserves can be placed on material that is in circulation. Materials cannot be renewed if a reserve has been placed by another client. Reserves placed by Carbondale Public Library card holders take precedence over reserves placed on the same titles by clients from other libraries.
Borrowers are responsible for all items checked out on their card. This includes any fines due to late return and fees for damage or loss of an item. A service charge of $.50 is added to each overdue notice or bill that is mailed to clients. The library will refund payment for lost material if found and returned within 30 days of payment. However, the $5 processing fee for lost or damaged materials is non-refundable.
The normal lending periods and fines for each type of material are listed below:

- 1 $1.00 fine assessed if items are returned in book drops.
- 2 Interlibrary loan items from outside Shawnee Library System are renewable at discretion of owning library. Check with Interlibrary Loan clerk.

- 4 Circulate only to Carbondale Public Library card holders.
- 5 Equipment includes slide projector, display board.
Maximum fines are as follows:
$30 on equipment and art prints; $5 on all other types of materials. All borrowers are subject to the lending and fine policies listed above. This includes individuals who borrow materials on interlibrary loan from Carbondale Public Library.
